Must have skills to be a business process manager

As more and more companies realise the impact of effective business process management, the demand for qualified business process managers will continue to grow...

Over the last decade, the BPO industry and careers have evolved from just an outsourcing utility to an innovation hub. This is in all kinds, from technology services to extracting actionable business insights to ensuring long-term client engagements. In its new and improved avatar, it's called BPM (Business Process Management). Today, the roles are more niche and people are joining the industry for specialised roles. Business Process Manager is one such role which is on top of the employer's wish list.

Muralidhar Teppala, vice president & head-India & APAC Recruitment, GENPACT CMITS, Genpact Headstrong Capital Markets told TimesJobs that in 2015, BPM (Business Process Manager) will be the hottest profile considering its growing demand in the BPO/ITeS industry.
As more and more companies realise the impact effective business process management can have on business performance and profitability, the demand for qualified business process managers will continue to grow, highlighted Manuel D'Souza, director-HR, Serco Global Services in TimesJobs RecruiteX Bi-Annual Report (Jan-Jun 2015).
Role of Business Process Manager
Business process management involves documenting, analysing and designing business processes, as well as overseeing the implementation of process improvements. Such a specialist may also be responsible for coordinating the activities of individuals and departments involved in a particular process and ensuring they are working as efficiently and effectively as possible, explains D'Souza.
A business process manager may be required to use or develop systems to monitor and measure business processes, so many employers prefer candidates with computer proficiency. Knowledge of Six Sigma, TQM (Total Quality Management) and other project and process management systems is a significant advantage for anyone serving in a business process manager position.
Must Have Skills
A good blend of communication skills and technical competence: While most technical candidates have functional skill-sets, technical skills combined with rich communication skills will give a business process manager a competitive edge.
Embracing growth and learning: Given the pace of technological advancements, one needs to keep learning and be at the forefront of the learning curve. Today, IT has moved beyond maintenance and infrastructure, so that also calls for a need to understand the role of new applications. The interplay between these new applications and applying this information within the BPO environment will be crucial for a business process manager.
Critical thinking and problem solving: Given the nature of the industry, one is constantly on the look-out for empowered employees that can provide critical thinking and a resolution to client queries. A value-driven approach and an attitude of empathy holds importance for a business process manager.
